Scientific Research

  Science and technology are the first productive force. Being a national team, scientific research on TCM is the central task of the Academy. Always taking a lead on the national level, the Academy has carried out an all-round research on TCM, according to the overall requirements of the State Science and Technology Development Plan on TCM, to meet the demands of the national strategy, and to improve the health level of the people. From 1996 to 2005, the number of the research projects undertaken by the Academy has increased year by year, with more and more research investments.

  By the end of 2005, the Academy has undertaken 450 research projects of different subjects in total, including 192 national projects, 166 projects from the State Administration of TCM, 12 projects from other ministries, 57 projects from Beijing, 7 projects from WHO, and 16 projects from the Academy. The total research investment was 1720.7 million Yuan/RMB. /P>

Scientific research has already become a priority on the agenda (the preoccupation) of the Academy for further development, and it will surely inspire the Academy to march for the goal of representing the highest levels of TCM not only in China but also in the world.

Research institutes

The Institute of Chinese Materia Medica

  The Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS) was founded on December 19, 1955. It was the first national institute specially engaged in the research of Chinese materia medica in China. Since 1983,the institute has been designated as the Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine of the World Health Organization. Up to now, it has been redesignated for five terms continuously. The Director of the institute is Professor Huang Luqi.

 The institute has 191 staff, including 178 researchers and technicians, among them,72 are professors and associate professors. There are 5 research departments and 6 research centers in the institute, they are as follows:

  Meanwhile, R & D Center of New Drugs of Chinese Materia Medica is also affiliated to the institute. Three periodicals are published nationwide, such as: national academic periodicals “China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica”, “China Journal of Experimental Traditional Medical Formulae”, and popular science magazine “Family and Traditional Chinese Medicine”. Doctoral and master’s degree research work has been carried out for subjects of “Chinese Materia Medica” and “Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine”. Moreover, postdoctoral stations of the same subjects have been established in this institute.

The Acupuncture Institute

  The Acupuncture Institute of CACMS was established in 1951. It is one of the WHO Collaborating Centers for Traditional Medicine and the biggest scientific research organization specialized on acupuncture in China. The institute has been involved in all of the national key research programs on acupuncture throughout the country over the past 5 decades. China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center and the Acupuncture Hospital of CACMS are its two subordinate organizations.

The Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine

he Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established on the basis of the Laboratory Center of China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CATCM). It is the only state-run institution in China focusing on basic research of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). For more than 20 years since its establishment, the institute adopted traditional and modern scientific and technological methods to launch basic researches on TCM. The institute has 8 research departments and 100 staff members, among which 22 are senior research scientists. It has successively undertaken projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, PRC.

  The institute had gained more than 40 scientific achievements. It researched and developed many new medicines and patents. Every year it recruits graduate students at home and abroad. The magazine China Journal of Basic Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine sponsored by the institute is published throughout China.

The Institute of Information on Traditional Chinese Medicine (IITCM)

  The Institute of Information on Traditional Chinese Medicine (IITCM), China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS), celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2006. Since May 1981, IITCM has been the unique national institution of information on TCM in China. It is one of the 14 major components of CACMS. The Director of IITCM currently in office is Prof. Cui Meng.

  IITCM has 155 employees, 4 research units: Document Resources Center; Data Center on TCM; Intelligence Center on TCM and Information Cooperation Center on TCM. IITCM was authorized by the Ministry of Education, PRC, to award Master degrees in Informatics. And IITCM is one of the WHO cooperation centers for informatics of TCM, it is the director commissioner of Committee on Library and Information Service of Chinese medicine. And it is the Chinese medical document retrieval center of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), PRC. IITCM is the data-sharing center of TCM, Currently, the TCM database system consists of over 60 categories of Chinese Medicine Databases.

  The library of CACMS has the largest and most extensive collection of books and journals on TCM in the country, among which over 20,000 volumes of books are rare and precious editions. The Traditional Chinese Medical History Museum in the Academy, with more than 3,000 pieces of collected historical relics, is a specialized professional museum, which contains the biggest collection of TCM relics in China.

  IITCM mainly carries out the research work on collection, storage and service of scientific and technological documents, database building, information standardization research, information analysis and research, information service network infrastructure construction, and information professionals training. IITCM publishes Chinese Journal of Information on TCM, China Medical Abstracts – TCM, and International Journal of TCM.

The Institute of Basic Research in Clinical Medicine

  The Institute of Basic Research in Clinical Medicine, CACMS, was newly founded in 2006 as a social welfare-related scientific research institution. It is focusing on basic issues in clinical medicine of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), such as the clinical basic criteria and practice guideline establishment, clinical efficacy and safety evaluation, TCM preventive medicine. The founding director of the institute is Professor Wang Yong-yan, an academician in China Academy of Engineering.

  The institute is carrying out two major programs, the TCM personalized therapy standardization and TCM preventive medicine, and involving the five main areas: clinical basic research, diagnosis (combining with TCM pattern identification), psychology in TCM, rehabilitation and health care, preventive medicine.

  There are four scientific research departments, including standard research center, clinical evaluation center, department of medicopsychology, department of preventive medicine.

  There are 30 employees in the institute at present, and more than 20 PhD or Master Degree students, about 20 Postdoctorates are working in the institute.

  The institute, with her own clinical case databases, clinical trial design platforms, statistical packages, systems biology analysis softwares, and with close collaborations with genomical and metanomical platforms, immunological and pathological platforms, community clinics and hospitals, would contribute more to TCM standardization and globalization.

The Experimental Research Center

  The Experimental Research Center, equipped with the techniques of molecular biology, morphology, functional testing and substance analysis, is a share platform for scientific research on Chinese medicine in China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The Center also undertakes the research projects on Chinese medicine and acupuncture by means of modern scientific techniques and constantly explores the suitable methodology in the experimental research on Chinese medicine. The Sino-Austrian Collaborating Center for Chinese Medical Sciences and the Coca-Cola Research Center for Chinese Medicine in China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences are both in the Experimental Research Center.
